How to have a last minute party for the kids

Birthday-cupcakes

As we’re still in the midst of the summer holidays, it can be difficult coming up with ideas to keep your kids entertained. Even if you’re the most organised of mums or dads, there are just some things that we can’t predict which can hamper our plans altogether, including the old faithful British weather.

If you’ve found yourself having to entertain the kids at home without making any prior plans, there’s no need to panic – you can still have a great kids’ party without having to resort to drastic measures. Here are just a few tips for a fun party that can be organised in a hurry.

Throw a pyjama party

One of the best ways to entertain the kids and put yourself in the good books of all your friends is to have a few of your son or daughter’s friends over for a sleepover. This is an easy and inexpensive method of having fun and requires little to no planning. Ask your child what his of her favourite DVD is and make sure it’s on the agenda.

Rather than spending hours putting cheese and pineapple on sticks, the kids will be just as happy with a naughty takeaway pizza, and they’ll certainly benefit from not having the sugar rush of party goody bags. Then of course, there are the sleeping arrangements to consider. Ask your guests to bring over their own duvets to help the kids make their own comfortable sleeping environment.

Create your own disco

Thanks to the advent of today’s technology, you don’t have to spend hours flicking through telephone books trying to book a DJ. Invite your child’s friends round for a last minute disco in your own home – all you need to do is close the curtains and consult your home computer or even smartphone or tablet to create the perfect playlist. Disco lights aren’t a stretch too far either – you can create the same effect by mounting some bicycle lights on the ceiling (just don’t tell the kids!)

Have a bake off

The Great British Bake off is so hugely popular for a reason – it’s a great way of testing one’s creative skills and the result is always a few yummy cakes. If you’re just entertaining the kids for a day, consider delving deep into your cupboards to see if you can cook up a storm. Boys and girls will love the opportunity to get their hands dirty making their own cupcakes or sponges, and the beauty of this is that the majority of the ingredients will already be in your cupboard.
